Visual Anthropology

Course Description

This course focuses on a variety of visual texts, from documentary films about global, non-Western cultures to fictional films made in the U.S. The course goes into depth on certain topics, including aesthetic perceptions of landscape photos, voicing in anthropological documentaries (i.e., subtitles, dubbing, and voice-over narration), and reflections of social tensions in popular U.S. films. In terms of skills, emphasis is placed on close readings of visual texts, as well as interviews and surveys designed to investigate audience perceptions of these texts.
