Biology Willamette College

Course Description

An investigative study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate animal development. Topics include genetic and biochemical control of cell division and differentiation, cell-cell communication and cell movement. Focus on both classical experiments and modern molecular and genetic techniques will be undertaken in various animal model systems including the sea urchin (S. purpuratus), worm (C. elegans), fruit fly (D. melanogaster), and zebrafish (D. rerio) to highlight evolutionarily conserved features of development. The course includes lectures, readings, and discussions of relevant primary literature, and independent research. Laboratory.
