The Early Novel
Course Description
Study of the development of the novel in Britain, from Restoration-era spiritual autobiography, fable, and romance to Jane Austens psychological realism. Attention to questions of form, genre, and canon-formation, as well as the novels intervention in debates about courtship, domesticity, and female authorship, middle-class individualism and national community, reason and feeling, empiricism and enchantment, and the social value of reading.
