Modern East Asia
Course Description
An introduction to the conjoined histories of China, Japan, and Korea from 1800 to 1950. During this period, East Asian societies experienced cultural and political revolutions, imperialism, and war. This course examines the events which led to the formation of the modern states of China, Japan, and Korea. It uses a transnational perspective in order to identify common themes in modern East Asian history. Course readings feature translated personal narratives to highlight the individual experiences involved in the making of this history.
