Music and AI: Creative Practices and Critical Inquiry

MusicWillamette College

Course Description

This course explores the relationship between music and artificial intelligence from creative, critical, and historical perspectives. Students examine how AI systems are used to generate, analyze, and transform music, and engage with questions of authorship, creativity, labor, and responsibility in contemporary musical practice. Through guided listening, readings, discussions, and case studies, the course considers how these tools reshape notions of craft and expertise, alter traditional forms of musical labor, and transform the field of recorded media.Reserved for music majors, the 300-level version includes hands-on creative work with AI-based music tools. Students create original musical projects using selected AI systems and present their work and research in a formal presentation. This version emphasizes creative experimentation, technical engagement, and critical reflection on the artistic use of AI in music.
