Program Description
In the Global Cultural Studies program, students investigate diverse cultures-including those of the United States-through their languages, social contexts, and cultural texts. "Cultural texts" refer to literature, television, film, and other forms of art and communication, and "social contexts" include the dynamic and often contested norms, values, symbols, practices, and structures of social groups. Global Cultural Studies courses are taught by faculty from diverse cultural backgrounds trained in Cultural Anthropology, Modern Languages, and other disciplines. Global Cultural Studies courses are designed to hone students' skills in close reading, data discernment, critical analysis, and original thinking, with an emphasis on developing and promoting cross-cultural understanding. Graduates will be well prepared to thrive in today's diverse and interconnected world, and to pursue careers in education, business, health, social services, law, the arts, and other areas.
